Copenhagen Card in Summer
Peak season. Peak value.

Summer unlocks two attractions that don’t exist any other time of year, extends your daily sightseeing window by two hours, and puts Tivoli, the harbour, and Copenhagen’s best day trips all in reach on a single card.

Why Summer

Why summer is the card’s best season

Four reasons the Copenhagen Card returns more value per day in summer than any other time of year.

Longer days, more attractions

Copenhagen daylight runs until 10pm in June and July

5–6 attractions per day realistic — versus 3–4 in winter

The card breaks even faster — fewer attractions needed per day to stay ahead

Evening harbour light makes GoBoat and canal tours genuinely unmissable

Summer-only inclusions

Frederiksborg Ferry — runs May to September only, included with Discover

Baadfarten Boat Tours — scenic lake tours, May to September only, Discover only

Neither attraction exists on the card in any other season

Both pair naturally with Frederiksborg Castle for a full day trip

Tivoli at its best

Tivoli’s main season runs April to late September

Gardens entry included with both Discover and Hop

Summer concerts and live entertainment in the gardens

Ride tickets are not included — budget €20–30 extra per person

Both cards enhanced in summer

Hop card gains all three Stromma bus routes — Green and Purple Lines run in summer only

Discover card unlocks Frederiksborg Ferry and Baadfarten alongside all 80+ attractions

Louisiana sculpture gardens at their best in summer light

Day trips to Kronborg, Roskilde, and Hillerød all in full bloom

Summer Only

Two attractions you can only get in summer

These don’t appear on the card any other time of year. Both are included with the Discover card only, running May through September.

May – September only
Seasonal boat · Discover card only · Allow 1–2 hrs

Frederiksborg Ferry

A small ferry that crosses the lake directly to Frederiksborg Castle — the most scenic way to arrive. Runs May to September and is not available on the card at any other time of year.

Combine with Frederiksborg Castle (included) and the castle gardens (free entry) for a full day out. The Discover card covers the train to Hillerød and the ferry across the lake.

May – September only
Seasonal boat tour · Discover card only · Allow 1 hr

Baadfarten Boat Tours

Scenic lake boat tours running May to September — a slower, quieter alternative to the Copenhagen harbour tours. Not available outside summer. Included with the Discover card.

A good pairing with the Frederiksborg Ferry on the same day trip — two seasonal boat rides on one Discover card.

Water & Harbour

Water experiences — Copenhagen from the harbour

Summer evenings on the water are some of the best hours you’ll spend in Copenhagen. All three are included with the card.

No booking needed
Canal tour · Both cards · Allow 1 hr

Canal Tours Copenhagen

The classic guided canal tour through Copenhagen’s historic waterways. Runs every 30 minutes in season — no pre-booking needed.

Board at Gammel Strand or Nyhavn. The evening departure in summer light is worth planning around.

Book same-day on arrival
Harbour tour · Both cards · Allow 1–2 hrs

GoBoat Harbor Tours

Self-drive solar-powered boats on Copenhagen harbour. The card covers entry — you book your timeslot same-day at the dock.

Head to Islands Brygge 10 and book in person on the day. Busiest in summer — go early morning or early evening to avoid the longest waits.

No booking needed
Harbour bus · Discover card only · As needed

Harbour Buses

Copenhagen’s harbour buses are part of the public transport network — included with the Discover card and one of the most scenic ways to cross the city.

Route 991 and 992 connect Nyhavn, the Opera House, and Islands Brygge. A free ride that most visitors miss entirely.

Tivoli Gardens

Tivoli in summer — what the card covers

Tivoli’s main season runs April to late September. The card gets you through the gates — here’s what that means in practice.

No booking needed
Amusement park · City centre · Both cards · Allow 2–4 hrs

Tivoli Gardens

One of the world’s oldest amusement parks sits at the centre of Copenhagen — gardens, fountains, live music, and restaurants all within a few minutes’ walk of Central Station. In summer, the park runs evening concerts and the atmosphere after dark is unlike anywhere else in the city.

Arrive before noon on weekdays to walk straight in. Afternoons in July and August get crowded. The gardens are open until midnight on summer Fridays and Saturdays.
Rides are not included with the card — budget an extra €20–30 per person if you want to use them. Gardens access alone is worth the visit.

Day Trips

Day trips from Copenhagen — summer is the right time

The Discover card covers trains across the Capital Region. In summer, castle gardens are open, sculpture parks are at their best, and seasonal boats add a second layer to each trip.

No booking needed
Art museum · 40 min by train · Discover only · Allow 3–4 hrs

Louisiana Museum of Modern Art

World-class modern art set in clifftop gardens above the Øresund. The sculpture garden in summer light — with views across to Sweden — is one of the finest experiences in Denmark.

Combine the museum, sculpture gardens, and the café terrace for a full day. The Discover card covers the train from Copenhagen Central — 40 minutes each way.

No booking needed
Historic castle · UNESCO · 40 min by train · Discover only · Allow 2–3 hrs

Kronborg Castle

Hamlet’s castle on the Øresund strait — a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the most dramatic fortresses in northern Europe. Coach tours peak in July and August.

Arrive before 10am in July and August to beat the coach groups. The Discover card covers the 40-minute train from Copenhagen Central to Helsingør.

No booking needed
Historic castle · 45 min by train · Discover only · Allow 3–4 hrs

Frederiksborg Castle

A Renaissance palace set on three islands in a lake — the largest royal castle in Scandinavia. Castle gardens are free to enter. In summer, the Frederiksborg Ferry crosses the lake.

Take the train to Hillerød (45 min, covered by Discover card), visit the castle, then take the seasonal ferry back across the lake for the full experience.

Book Ahead

Four attractions that require advance booking in summer

The card covers entry to all four — but entry alone does not guarantee a slot. In peak summer, these fill up fast.

Palm House — Botanical Garden

  • Timed entry slot required — free to reserve online before visiting
  • The card covers the entry fee — book the slot separately
  • Fills up by mid-morning on summer weekends — book the evening before

Museum of Illusions

  • Timed entry required in peak season
  • Book online the day before in July and August
  • The card covers the entry fee — timed slot is booked separately

IKONO Copenhagen

  • Timed entry — sells out on summer weekends
  • Book online at least one day in advance
  • The card covers the entry fee — timed slot is separate

Planetarium

  • IMAX screenings are timed — book online before visiting
  • The card covers the screening fee — timed slot is separate
  • Check the schedule online and book the showing you want in advance

The card does not book your slot for you

For all four venues above, you need to book a timed entry slot independently before you visit. The card covers the admission cost — it does not reserve your place in the queue. Turning up without a slot in peak summer means you may not get in.

Common Questions

Summer questions — answered

Is Tivoli Gardens included with the Copenhagen Card in summer?

Yes. Tivoli’s main season runs from April to late September and gardens entry is included with both the Discover and Hop cards. Ride tickets are not included — budget an extra €20–30 per person if you want to use the rides. No pre-booking needed — just show your app QR code at the entrance. Full Tivoli details →

What attractions are only available in summer?

Two attractions are exclusive to the summer season on the Copenhagen Card: the Frederiksborg Ferry (May–September), which crosses the lake to Frederiksborg Castle, and Baadfarten Boat Tours (May–September), which offer scenic lake tours. Both are included with the Discover card only — they do not appear on the card in any other season.

Do I need to pre-book anything in summer?

Yes — four venues require timed entry slots even with the card: Palm House Botanical Garden (free online slot), Museum of Illusions (book the day before in July and August), IKONO Copenhagen (sells out on weekends), and the Planetarium (book your IMAX screening online). The card covers admission — it does not secure your timed slot. Book these independently before you visit.

Discover or Hop for a summer trip?

For most summer visitors, the Discover card returns more value. It covers all public transport including the airport metro, unlocks both summer-only attractions (Frederiksborg Ferry and Baadfarten), and makes day trips to Louisiana, Kronborg, and Frederiksborg possible without extra fares. The Hop card gains all three Stromma bus routes in summer but misses the seasonal boats and day trips. Full comparison →
